Meta has finally revealed its plans for integrating third-party chats with WhatsApp and Messenger. This update, which is rolling out for users in the European Union, will allow users to choose whether to combine Messenger and WhatsApp messages with third-party chats in one inbox or keep them separate.

Meta is also introducing new notifications in both apps to alert users when they can link chats from newly supported platforms. According to Meta, they have exceeded the “basic” requirements for interoperable messaging by offering features such as reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts. Starting next year, users will also be able to create groups with people from third-party chats. Additionally, Meta plans to support third-party voice and video calls by 2027. It is a best technology ever.

Meta has been preparing for this integration in response to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which requires “digital gatekeepers” like Meta to make WhatsApp and Messenger interoperable with other platforms, such as iMessage, Telegram, Google Messages, and Signal. However, one challenge is ensuring privacy, as third-party apps will need to use the same Signal Protocol that WhatsApp employs for encryption. Meta has stated it will provide access to the Signal Protocol upon request to its partners.
